These cereal treats are sweet, super easy, and extra gooey — exactly the way I like them! The fun twist of chocolate-flavored cereal and a buttery caramel surprise filling makes them even more irresistible. They’re best if eaten the same day they’re made, but leftovers can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days.
16caramel squares, cut in half(such as Kraft – and see Notes!)
Instructions
Coat an 8”-square baking pan with nonstick cooking spray.
Add the butter to a large pot, and melt over medium-low heat. Add the marshmallows and cook, stirring constantly, until they’ve completely melted. Remove the pan from the heat, and stir in the cereal until completely incorporated.
Coat your palms and fingers with cooking spray. Lightly press half of the cereal mixture into the bottom of the pan. Arrange the caramels into 4 horizontal rows where the center of the cereal treats would be (about ½” from the top edge, then 1” below that, then 1” below that, then ½” from the bottom edge). Gently press the caramels into the cereal mixture beneath them. Lightly press the second half of the cereal mixture on top.
Let the cereal treats cool and set for at least 1 hour before slicing into 16 square bars.
Notes
IMPORTANT CARAMEL SQUARES NOTE – RED BEFORE BEGINNING: The caramels typically aren’t perfect squares — usually somewhat rectangular with a slightly shorter edge and a slightly longer edge — so cut through that shorter and squatter side, if you can. (This makes the caramel pieces as long and wide as possible!)IMPORTANT STEP 3 NOTE – READ BEFORE BEGINNING: Do not press too firmly when putting the cereal mixture into the pan! The harder you press, the more you compact the cereal, and the harder it’ll be to bite into the treats.CEREAL NOTE + ALTERNATIVE: Cocoa Pebbles are naturally gluten-free, so these cereal treats are too. You can also substitute Cocoa Krispies (cocoa-flavored crisp rice cereal), but then these cereal treats won’t be gluten-free.HOW TO STORE: Although best if eaten the same day they’re made, leftovers can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days to help preserve their gooey texture.
