For every road trip or summer hike, Mom packed plenty of snacks for us in her backpack. She brought Ritz crackers and peanut butter, fruit gummy pouches, salty pretzel rods, mini cheddar goldfish, and… Chex Mix.
It was a huge treat to get Chex Mix. My little brother and I usually fought over the crunchy rye and bagel chips, which wore down our patient mother’s nerves enough that she started buying us Wheat Thins instead. The General Mills production line just couldn’t get the chex-cereal-to-bagel-chip ratio right to satisfy the cravings of us five-year-olds!
While I still love the rye and bagel chips the most, I started sharing them a bit more as we grew older. (I now give him 1 for every 2 that I eat.) But I might change my mind and start hogging them all again… These homemade bagel chips are way too addicting!
- Preheat the oven to 350°, and lightly coat a baking sheet with nonstick cooking spray.
- Slice the bagels into 1/8”-thick rounds. Lay the rounds onto the prepared sheet, and lightly coat with cooking spray. Stir together the salt, garlic powder, and cayenne in a small bowl, and sprinkle evenly over the tops of the bagel rounds. Bake at 350° for 8-10 minutes or until hard and crunchy. Cool on the pan for 5 minutes before turning out onto a wire rack to cool completely.
I love this! I never realized how easy it is to make bagel chips. I think I’ll make mine from rye bagels….
I was surprised at how easy it was too! I wish I could’ve found rye bagels, but they only had whole wheat at Safeway. Maybe TJ’s or Whole Foods might carry rye bagels instead!
i hat to be stupid but if your using bagles how do you get the small pieces lin in the chex mix?? Can you email me the answer? Thanks…..ccba@aol.com
These bagel chips are similar to the rye and bagel chips found in Chex Mix, not the chex cereal or pretzels or wavy breadsticks! Just set the bagel on the cutting board and slice it vertically in thin strips. That’s all there is to it! 🙂
what bagel is the nutrition facts based on
I used Einstein Bros bagels to calculate the nutrition facts. If using different bagels, this is the nutrition calculator that I use so you can see how the nutrition information will vary. 🙂 I’m excited to hear what you think of the recipe Juliana!
What kind of Einstein bros bagel??
The only multi-grain one on their menu! 😉
The 9 grain bagel??
That would be the one!
