When an old high school friend came into town last weekend to hang out, we decided to grab coffee before starting the day’s adventures. We found a place not too far from the airport, wandered around the other shops in the marketplace a bit, and then walked inside.
I fell in love with the coffee shop the moment we entered. Bright white walls, tall vaulted ceilings, white ceramic hexagonal tiles on the floors and backsplash beneath the menu, plenty of tables and chairs made of wood and metal, along with a few bar stools and cushioned armchairs… Trendy, chic, yet casual with a totally relaxed vibe.
We arrived before the lunchtime rush, so only one person stood in line. We stepped in right behind him, and since I almost always order the same thing—plain black coffee (Dad, you’d be proud!), but this time on ice because of the warm summer day—I glanced at their baked treats during our brief wait.
Their sweets sat underneath the clear glass domes of cake stands, just like you’d expect to see on a grandmother’s countertop. Squares of streusel-topped coffee cake, a few glazed donuts, even fluffy waffles that they offered to warm and shower with powdered sugar…
But I held off, sticking with just the iced coffee, and baked these Healthy Chocolate Chip Scones at home to satisfy my coffee shop pastry cravings instead! Made with no heavy cream, refined flour or sugar, they’re much healthier than the sweets I spotted, and they taste just as delicious as traditional scones—but have just 156 calories!

I can’t wait to hear what you think of these scones too, Kim! Let me know if you’d like to make any substitutions to make them more diabetic-friendly. I’m happy to help in any way I can! 🙂
Hi Amy!
Love the recipe and cannot wait to try it out!
I was wondering whether I can substitue the flour used in the recipe for almond flour?
Thanks a lot already!
I really appreciate your interest in my recipe Elise! I generally don’t recommend that substitute because the scones will turn out much denser. I’d love to hear what you think if you try them! 🙂
Omg i loved this recipe. The scones were moist yet had this crumbly texture, perfect sweetness and nice crust 🙂 yum. I used choc chunks instead of chips (just saw the choc chips recipe – will give them a go soon!) and agave syrup. Yum yum yum. I have a question though – since this is a pretty high temperature, is there a way i can avoid burning of the bottom part as my oven is small in size. I used a baking tray and covered it with aluminum foil and aprayed it with oil. I was using the lower grill of the oven. Had to scrape off the bottom parts but OMG your recipes are pure genious!!
I’m so glad you loved these scones! Is your oven gas or electric? Does a normal baking sheet fit inside without any issues? Is your baking sheet very dark metal or light colored aluminum? We’ll get that burned bottom issue sorted out so you don’t have to scrape off those bits next time! 🙂
Hi, yay i got that issue sorted by baking in a ceramic dish instead. Omg im in love with these scones and so is my daughter (she is one and a half year old). I literally eat two of these everyday. I have a bit of a sweet tooth so i also stick in three spoons of stevia sweetener. You can imagine how often i cook them now. And the post eating feeling is sooo good too! Because there is no guilt for eating something soo yummy, filling and sweet 🙂 I can not thank you enough!
And the crumb too! The texture of the scones is beautiful – light and crumbly. The cold butter in such a small amount does wonders in this recipe. And it is so easy to make! Thank you for perfecting this recipe so that we can enjoy it.
WOW!!! I’m so glad you and your daughter love these scones so much Zkhan!! That’s the best kind of compliment if you’re eating two every day and baking them that often — thank you for sharing that with me!! 🙂 In case you’re interested in trying out a different flavor, you can find the rest of my scone recipes here!
