A few weeks before I started my junior year of high school, my family and I visited Café Gratitude in a neighboring city for dinner. A recommendation from a coworker friend of Mom’s, the restaurant menu was comprised of entirely organic, vegan-friendly dishes such quinoa bowls, Caesar wraps, spicy tacos, and seasonal pizzas, and each option came with its own fun and unique name…
Names like “Humble” (the Indian curry quinoa bowl), “Glorious” (the Caesar wrap), “Transformed” (the spicy tacos), and “Giving” (the seasonal pizza).
To order, you told the server, “I am…” then stated the name of the dish. “I am Humble… I am Glorious… I am Transformed… I am Giving…” And of course, my mom’s and my personal favorite: “I am Surrendering” (the brownie ice cream sundae!).
Each delicious entrée was bursting with bold flavors, and the talented chefs did such an amazing job preparing the meal that nobody in my family missed the meat or dairy. Our entire dinner was a really fun experience, especially ordering our food, so my mom purchased a special bright blue Café Gratitude plate before we left, with words painted around the rim that read, “What are you grateful for today?”
When I spotted that plate at my parents’ house yesterday, I smiled to myself because I immediately knew my answer…
