A cute and easy Halloween treat!
In elementary school, the principal and PTA organized quite a few motivational speaker assemblies for the students. Local firefighters and police officers, forest rangers and ambulance drivers, Korean drummers and even a pack-a-day smoker with a hole in his throat all came to talk and inspire us to do great things.
We spent most of those times in the Multi-Purpose Room trying not to fidget as our rear ends went numb from sitting on the hard tile floor.
(How long until recess?)
Occasionally, they arranged for somebody to visit only a small number of classrooms for a more intimate setting with extra time to answer questions. Nearly every year, the Bat Lady appeared, carrying her cages covered in black cloth and heavy-duty gloves for holding her charges.
She prepared a PowerPoint presentation for the overhead projector, explaining how harmless her little friends were and debunking the vampire blood-sucking stores that always spread around Halloween. I nodded and smiled at her pictures of their cute furry bodies until…
She pulled one out of its cage. Wrapped up tight in its leathery wings, I pictured Dracula (along with the 19 other students in class) and gripped my desk with white knuckles until she locked it back in its lair.
Everyone else breathed a sigh of relief, later pretending to be Dracula Bats on the playground, but I had nightmares for a solid week. What if one flew into my room? And bit me? And actually sucked my blood?
After 3rd grade, I made sure the only bats I encountered were frosted sugar cookies or decorative icing toppers!
Which is why I absolutely adore these Chocolate Pretzel Batwiches. (a) They’re only silhouettes—no visible fangs!—(b) they’re sweet and salty, one of my favorite flavor combinations, and (c) they require 2 ingredients and less than 10 minutes to make. (Or less than 5, if you don’t include chilling!)
The hardest part about this recipe is buying the pretzels! I finally found a bag at Walmart, which I originally used for these brownies. Once you locate the package, set aside all of the pumpkins (for the brownies!) and grab a bag of chocolate chips.
Be sure to line the baking sheet with parchment paper. If the chocolate chips melt completely, it’ll be easier to peel them off the paper than the metal. Place a bat pretzel on the paper, and put a chocolate chip on top of each wing. Repeat for as many sandwiches as you’d like (but make sure you still have enough pretzels for the top!). Stick those chocolate-topped bats in the oven for 1 minute, press another pretzel on the melty chocolate chips, and pop the batwiches in the fridge for 5 minutes to set.
These Chocolate Pretzel Batwiches are scarily simple to make, and they’ll disappear faster than a vampire in the sunshine!
These chocolate pretzel sandwiches are the perfect combination of salty and sweet! If chocolate chips aren’t your thing, substitute butterscotch or peanut butter or even cinnamon chips. They’re best if eaten within 3-4 days of making; keep them in the fridge until ready to serve.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F, and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Place 20 pretzels on the prepared sheet. Place 1 chocolate chip in each bat wing. Bake the chocolate-topped pretzels at 350°F for 1 minute. Remove from the oven, and immediately press the remaining pretzels on top of the melted chocolate chips. Cool to room temperature, and place in the refrigerator until ready to serve.

I. Hate. Bats. They freak me out! But I’d eat these, with no problem! 😉

Me too! I’m glad there aren’t too many around where we live. (At least, that’s what I’m telling myself!)

Thanks Gretchen! Since you can’t have chocolate, maybe you can make some with butterscotch or peanut butter chips. I don’t want you to miss out on the Halloween fun! 🙂
