Throughout my early childhood, my mom pulled out the flour, sugar, and hand mixer from the pantry about once a month, at most. On those afternoons, my brother and I hovered in the kitchen, practically acting like Mom’s two extra shadows, as she followed the recipe on the back of the bright yellow bag of chocolate chips.
She typically halved the recipe, knowing that the three of us could easily polish off a full batch in just four days, although she compromised by pouring in nearly twice as many chocolate chips. After popping the baking sheets in the oven, she handed my brother and me a beater from the mixer with bits of the velvety dough clinging to the metal, and I slowly licked it off, letting each buttery morsel melt on my tongue.
Once the timer buzzed, Mom whipped the trays from the oven, and a few minutes later, once the cookies had cooled enough to avoid burned fingers or tongues, she allowed each of us to select one from the wire racks. Perfectly warm, with the chips still melty and gooey and smearing dark brown streaks across my fingertips with every bite, I slowly savored its decadent richness before reaching for a second.
I still love cookies just as much as I did back then, but after learning a lot more about a healthy lifestyle, I now want my treats to contain no refined flour, sugar, and quite a bit less butter (or possibly even none at all)… Yet still taste delicious. I refuse to sacrifice those heavenly flavors!
And these are some of my absolute favorite clean eating cookie recipes! It was nearly impossible to narrow down my list to only 13 recipes, but these are the ones that always tempt me to reach for seconds {and thirds… and fourths…} from the cookie jar. I can’t wait to hear what you think of them too!
