Throughout my childhood, my family often took road trips from our house in the San Francisco suburbs down to Southern California. Sometimes we stopped at Disneyland as our final destination, other times we sped right past on our way to our grandparents’ house in San Diego, but we occasionally did both.
On most of those vacations, we pulled off of I-5 in Central California for lunch. We skipped the most iconic fast food chains and eased into a parking space in In-N-Out’s parking lot instead. We loved their fresh burgers and fries, and if my brother and I behaved well during the drive, Mom sometimes treated us to a chocolate milkshake!
Last month, we took another road trip to Grandma’s, and just like old times, my mom and brother wanted to stop at In-N-Out for lunch. The teenagers in front of them in line ordered milkshakes, and with temperatures above 100°F, it sounded like a very tempting idea!
But I held off and whipped up this Healthy Chocolate Milkshake when I returned home instead! It’s super simple to make: just 5 common ingredients that you probably have just sitting in your pantry and fridge. But unlike those indulgent childhood milkshakes, this one is only 138 calories with 19g+ of protein!
See how to make it by watching my video below! (Then get the recipe right below the video!)

Nutritional content for the Healthy Chocolate Milkshake is showing up as nutrition for the Chocolate Protein Smoothie.
Does that mean they have the same or about the same nutrition ?
Thanks much for these great recipes .
Yes! They’re the same thing. I gave this recipe a different name in my notes to myself — thanks for catching that! I’ve updated the Nutrition Information page accordingly. 🙂 I can’t wait to hear what you think of it David!
YUM! I just made this with cashew milk and added a touch of leftover coffee (decaf hazelnut creme) and OMG, my long iced tea spoon stood up in it in a pilsner glass! So yummy! Thanks Amy for ANOTHER yummy, healthy, filling recipe!
I’m so glad you enjoyed this milkshake Barbara! That sounds amazing, especially with your hazelnut creme coffee — yum!! 🙂 I can’t wait to hear what you try next!
Amy;
Hi,I just copied down your healthy chocolate milkshake smoothie recipe soon.I have a magic bullet blender that I use to make my healthy shakes and smoothies.I can use all of your ingredients in my blender.I use splenda or stevia powder instead of sugar because I am a type 2 diabetic and I am also lactose intolerant so I use natrel milk,vanilla,coconut,chocolate and cashew milk in my recipes.I am going to make your smoothie milkshake in my blender soon,and I will let you know how much I like and enjoy drinking this smoothie milkshake.I am also a chocoholic and anything chocolate I am eager to eat,but I have diabetic and for a really long time I had to stop eating it until I found some diabetic friendly chocolate recipes to make or even bake at home,which makes me really happy again.
Kim
I really appreciate your interest in my recipe Kim! I can’t wait to hear how your milkshake turns out. 🙂 My grandfather was diabetic, so I completely understand the need for alternatives. If you see a recipe of mine that you’d like to try but isn’t entirely diabetic-friendly, just leave a comment on that particular recipe, and we’ll work together to find substitutions for you and your diet!
I love this chocolate milkshake!!! I want to mix it up and have something without chocolate, do you have a recipe for vanilla milkshake? Could I just make this without the cocoa powder and add 1 tsp vanilla extract?
Thank you!!!
Ellie
I’m so glad you loved this chocolate milkshake Ellie! 🙂 I haven’t tried making a vanilla version, but I think you’re onto something. I’d love to hear what you think if you try that!
