One day during the summer before my senior year of high school, I headed over to my friends’ house to give them a short oboe lesson to help them prepare for the upcoming school year’s band class. When I arrived, I found the two girls standing in the kitchen, looking into a mixing bowl.
They were trying to make chocolate chip cookies from a store-bought mix, but after following the package’s instructions, they had decided the dough looked too dry and added nearly ¼ cup of milk… Which resulted in a very soupy mixture!
I set aside my sheet music and oboe case, and I gently guided them through salvaging the cookie dough. We added flour, a sprinkling of sugar, and a small splash of vanilla for good measure. Once it looked (and tasted!) back to normal, the girls dolloped it onto baking trays to pop in the oven.
We practiced a few songs while the cookies baked, and at the end of our session, we each enjoyed a cookie (or more!)… But the three of us unanimously agreed: we needed to continue both our music and our baking lessons to get the girls up to speed!
