Throughout my childhood, my family had two main 4th of July dessert traditions. We stayed home most years and barbequed in the backyard, so we ended our meal by pulling out my parents’ antique ice cream maker, the kind with a wooden bucket and hand crank, to mix up a batch of homemade vanilla ice cream.
Yet for a couple of years, we flew to Arizona to celebrate with our grandparents. Instead of homemade ice cream, we drove to Dairy Queen for dilly bars, hot fudge sundaes, or chocolate-dipped cones, and we tried really hard to wait to eat our treats until we arrived back at my grandparents’ back patio to watch the fireworks. (No easy feat with how quickly ice cream melts in the Arizona heat!)
I stuck with those traditions until after my second year of college when I stayed in town to work on campus during the summer. Since I didn’t own an ice cream maker and the city’s Dairy Queen had permanently closed years before, I decided to try making other 4th of July treats. I quickly realized those desserts could be festive, healthy, and delicious—and still pretty easy to make, too!
So I’ve rounded up some of my favorites to share with you: these 36 Healthy 4th of July dessert recipes! Some are classic summer staples (apple pie and peach crumble, I’m looking at you!), while others are fun red-white-and-blue treats, but they all taste amazing!

I love your recipes, but when I try to print them out they are so light that I can’t read them. It’s not my printer because your recipes are the only things that print this way. I would love to try making some of them.

I really appreciate your interest in my recipes, Penny! Let’s try to get that issue sorted out. 🙂 When you try to print, do you click on the blue printer icon in the top right corner of the recipe box? When you do that, it should bring up a PDF in a new browser tab or window. That PDF has regular black font, rather than the gray font that’s on my website!
