Shortly after graduating from college, I tried making my first berry pie from scratch. Always adventurous in the kitchen, I decided to create my own recipe as I went. I had baked plenty of apple, peach, pumpkin, and pecan pies while growing up—could a berry pie be all that different?
I eased the pie crust into the plate, carefully trimming the overhang, and spread my filling inside. It was a combination of frozen berries (so much cheaper since fresh weren’t in season!), cornstarch, and a bit of almond extract.
After placing the pie in the oven, I set my timer, anxiously checking on my dessert like a mama bird with her newly hatched chicks. Once the crust turned golden brown and the filling bubbled happily, I set my pie on the kitchen counter to cool.
Hours later, I tried slicing myself a piece to enjoy after dinner… But I ended up shoveling it out of the pie plate with a ladle! Overly juicy and practically soupy berry filling combined with an utterly soggy crust. Not exactly my best baking moment!
Since that day, I’ve never tried baking another berry pie… I prefer to stick with crumbles instead, like this Ultimate Healthy Blueberry Crumble! It’s so much easier to make (aka no fear of soggy crusts!), and that cinnamon-spiced oat streusel on top is simply divine. I always claim the slice with the most!
Each piece of this delicious crisp boasts a full serving of fruit too—and just 127 calories! With no refined flour or sugar, I practically call that breakfast food! ?

Looks very easy and delicious. YUM! Can’t wait to try it.
I’m excited to hear what you think of this crumble Melissa! 🙂
Ahhaha, I know the soggy soupy pie experience all too well! It’s all about trial and error right?! Plus, you had to learn some way. This looks so good, crumbles remind me of summer. My mom always makes a few depending on which berries we pick and ohhh boy are they tasty.
SO true about trial and error! That’s apparently the only way I learn in the kitchen! 😉 I’m kind of jealous of you being able to go berry picking! That sounds fabulous Brittany!!
Tried this tonight–what a great recipe–GF, low fat for those who need it, low sugar AND tastes fabulous! This is a keeper for sure. It’s wonderful that the blueberries really shine not overwhelmed by crust or sugar. Thank you!
I’m so glad you loved this crumble Judy! That means the world to me that you’d call this recipe a keeper. That’s the best compliment there is — thank you!! 🙂
A friend brought this to a pot luck dinner and it was delicious! I am planning on making it for my family but only have quick-cooking oats in my pantry. Will those work for this recipe?
I’m honored that you’d like to make my recipe after trying it at the potluck, Judy! Yes, quick cooking oats will work just fine. I hope you and your family enjoy this blueberry crumble just as much as you did at the potluck! 🙂
This came out so delicious and after a full day/night in the fridge it was perfection. Didn’t have vanilla ice cream but used a little whipped cream and yummm! Thanks for your healthy recipes I’m going to try apple crumble next!
I’m so glad you enjoyed this blueberry crumble, Alisa! Thanks for taking the time to let me know. That’s the best compliment there is, if you thought it was perfect — that really means a lot! 🙂 I can’t wait to hear what you think of the apple crumble too!
