A few weeks ago, my grandma and I met for coffee at the Starbucks in our quiet little neighborhood in the early afternoon. With the temperature near 70°F (I love living in Southern California during the winter months — I feel so spoiled with our weather!), we sat at one of the tables outside to chat and catch up.
Upon arriving, we exchanged small gifts… We had each brought snacks for the other person — something completely unplanned! Grandma passed me a big bag of miniature tangerines from her tree, and I handed her a batch of these incredible chocolate cookies for her to nibble on during her girls’ movie night that evening.
While Grandma stayed at the outdoor table, I headed inside to order coffee. Even though plenty of people filled the tables and chairs in the store, only two couples stood in front of me in line.
As I waited for my turn, I scanned the menu boards, smiling at the sight of them boasting their new almond milk honey flat white and coconut milk latte, and I also took a peek at what sat inside of the display cases. It looked like very few people had purchased the savory options of sandwiches, salads, and bistro boxes…
But the glass pastry shelves looked nearly empty! Only a small assortment of muffins, cookies, brownies, and slices of coffee cake still lingered after the Sunday morning crowds had finished their weekend coffee dates.
But before I reached the register to order, one of the people in front of me in line asked for a chocolate chip cookie and the last scone to pair with her chai latte… Which resulted in a cartoon light bulb going off in my head.
What if I combined the three??
I’m a huge chocoholic… I’m obsessed with the cozy spices found in chai… And scones are one of my favorite brunch items to bake…
So of course I just had to try it back at home!
The result? These amazing healthy chai spice chocolate chip scones! They’re so easy to make. You just need 1 bowl and 30 minutes!
These scones are full of decadent chocolate morsels and rich spice flavors, and they’re supremely moist and tender inside — even with no eggs or heavy cream. Although I’m somewhat biased, I think they taste a thousand times better than the ones sold by many coffee shops too!
KEY INGREDIENTS TO MAKE HEALTHY SPICED CHOCOLATE CHIP SCONES
Let’s go over how to make these healthy spiced chocolate chip scones! Perhaps you’ve noticed… But I’ve been obsessed with one-bowl recipes lately. I love how they usually result in fewer dishes to wash! 😉 And this is the next installment in that growing list of one-bowl recipes!
In your favorite mixing bowl, you’ll whisk together white whole wheat flour, baking powder, salt, and an assortment of spices. These spices include cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, allspice, nutmeg, and cloves… aka the spices common found in chai!
Hint: “Chai” is the word for a specific Indian beverage! It’s made from black tea and lots of rich, cozy spices. Therefore, saying “chai tea” is actually like saying “tea tea…” The tea is already included in “chai,” so you don’t need to add the word “tea” afterward! 😉
Yes, I know that’s a long list of spices… But I promise they make these healthy chocolate chip scones taste absolutely incredible. They just might be my all-time favorite scones — and since I’ve shared 50+ different scone recipes on my blog, that’s definitely saying something!
As for the white whole wheat flour, such a thing actually exists… And it’s not just a combination of white (aka all-purpose) flour and regular whole wheat flour! Instead, it’s made by finely grinding a special type of soft white wheat (hence the name!), whereas regular whole wheat flour comes from a heartier variety of red wheat. They both have the same health benefits, like extra fiber, but white whole wheat flour has a lighter taste and texture… Which lets the moist texture and rich flavors of your healthy spiced chocolate chip scones shine!
Tip: I’ve also included my two favorite gluten-free options in the Notes section of the recipe, if you’d like to make these healthy spiced chocolate chip scones gluten-free!
Next, you’ll work a small amount of very cold butter into your flour mixture. Traditional scone recipes often call for ¼ to ½ cup of butter (if not more!), but you merely need 1 ½ tablespoons for these healthy homemade scones. That really helps keep your chai spice chocolate chip scones low calorie and low fat!
And yes! The butter must be very cold and straight from the fridge. (Freezing isn’t necessary!) This is because the butter creates tender little pockets in the dough as it melts in the oven. If the butter starts to soften or melt ahead of time while you’re making the dough, then you miss out on that incredible tender texture!
Whereas traditional scone recipes also tend to call for heavy cream or whole milk for their tender texture, you’ll skip both and use Greek yogurt instead! In this recipe, Greek yogurt adds the same moisture but for a fraction of the calories… And it gives your healthy chai spice chocolate chip scones a protein boost too!
Tip: I’ve actually shared how to make these healthy chocolate chip scones vegan in the Notes section of the recipe too. Since they’re already eggless, it’s very easy to do!
Instead of the granulated sugar often found in traditional scone recipes, you’ll sweeten your healthy chai spice chocolate chip scones with pure maple syrup instead. That’s the kind that comes directly from maple trees! You can usually find it in clear glass bottles or squat plastic jugs (like this!), and the only ingredient on the label should be “maple syrup.”
Hint: Although you’re using a few ingredients not found in traditional scone recipes, I did create this recipe to taste as close to traditional scones as possible… aka they’re not overly sweet! If you prefer sweeter scones, that’s also easy to do. Just see the Notes section on how to modify this recipe to suit your tastes!
Finally, there’s one more key ingredient… The chocolate chips! I used these mini chocolate chips because they taste so rich, and their smaller size ensures that every bite of your healthy chai spice scones contains at least one morsel of chocolate (if not more!). That’s definitely a good thing in my [chocoholic] book!
HOW TO MAKE HEALTHY SPICED CHOCOLATE CHIP SCONES
It’s almost time to bake! First, shape your dough into a ¾”-tall circle. Since the dough is fairly sticky, I use my favorite mini spatula to do this. Next, brush the top and the sides of your dough with milk. This seals moisture into the dough, so the insides of your healthy spiced chocolate chip scones turn out deliciously tender, and it also creates a hint of a crust on the outside. I love that texture contrast!
Before sliding your baking sheet into the oven, slice your dough circle into 8 wedges. I do this by cutting a + into the dough to divide it into quarters, and then I cut each of those quarters in half. And people somebody always asks… I don’t separate them! By leaving them touching, the sides of your healthy chai spice chocolate chip scones turn out just as moist and tender as the insides.
Oh! And I love pressing some of the mini chocolate chips into the tops of the scones just before baking. I think it makes them look even more cute and irresistible, don’t you??
Time to eat! And when you make your own, remember to snap a picture and share it on Instagram using #amyshealthybaking and tagging @amyshealthybaking IN the photo itself! (That guarantees I’ll see your picture! 🙂 ) I’d love to see your healthy chai spice chocolate chip scones!
Healthy Chai Spice Chocolate Chip Scones
Ingredients
- 1 ½ cups (180g) white whole wheat flour or gluten-free* flour (measured like this)
- 2 ¾ tsp homemade chai spice (see Notes!)
- 1 ½ tsp baking powder
- ¼ tsp salt
- 1 ½ tbsp (21g) unsalted butter, very cold and cubed
- ½ cup (120g) plain nonfat Greek yogurt
- 3 tbsp (45mL) pure maple syrup
- 3 tbsp + 2 tsp (55mL) nonfat milk, divided
- 1 ½ tsp vanilla extract
- 2 ½ tbsp (35g) miniature chocolate chips, divided
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 425°F, and line a baking sheet with a silicone baking mat or parchment paper.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, chai spice, baking powder, and salt. Cut in the butter with a pastry cutter (highly recommended!) or the back of a fork until the mixture resembles fine crumbs. Stir in the Greek yogurt, maple syrup, 3 tablespoons of milk, and vanilla. Gently fold in 2 tablespoons of miniature chocolate chips.
- Shape the dough into a ¾” tall circle on the prepared baking sheet, and brush with the remaining milk. Slice the circle into 8 triangular segments with a sharp knife. Press the remaining miniature chocolate chips into the tops. (Don't separate the scones!) Bake at 425°F for 19-24 minutes, or until the tops are deep golden and the center feels firm to the touch. Cool on the pan for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

I’m not sure which I’m more jealous of – the perfect winter weather you’re enjoying, or the fact that your grandmother shared homegrown tangerines with you! I’m a big sucker for citrus! 🙂
These scones are such a genius combination. & I’m sure you’re not surprised that I love this flavor combination.
While typing this note, I thought it would be hard to make these any better, but … what about adding orange zest too?? OK, I might have gotten a little carried away.
Thanks for all the hard work that went into creating this elegant post Amy! ♡
Amy says...
You’re just the sweetest Megan — thank you SO much!! ♡ There’s no such thing as getting carried away with creativity in baking recipes… At least, not in my book! I should’ve thought to save some of the tangerines and try adding their zest to the scones. That would’ve been such a fun idea! (And come visit anytime, especially whenever you get tired of the cold during the winter!! ????????)
Babs says...
I can’t wait to try these. I love scones but am allergic to eggs so most scones are off limits. However, I’m not a big fan of chia spices. Would it be possible to make without the spices or substitute some other spices? Love your recipes.
Amy says...
I’m so honored that you’d like to make these Babs! Yes, if you’re not a fan of chai spices, you can definitely omit them or substitute ones you prefer instead. 🙂 I can’t wait to hear what you think of these scones if you try baking them!
Iris says...
Will definitely try these this week end, thanks Amy for your recipe once again.

It means a lot to me that you want to bake these scones this weekend Iris! I’m so excited to hear what you think of them! 🙂
Sally Duby says...
Hi Amy,
These sound amazng. I can’t wait to try these however I am trying to stay away from flour that has lectins in it like white and wheat flour. Do you know if you can use almond flour, Cassava flour, coconut flor or others like that?
Thank you!
Sally
Amy says...
I really appreciate your interest in my recipe Sally! Coconut flour definitely will not work in these scones. If you substitute almond flour, your scones will likely turn out denser because it lacks gluten (a protein in wheat flour that helps baked goods both rise and maintain their shape while cooling!), but their flavor will remain the same. I don’t have enough experience with cassava flour just yet, so I’m not sure about that option. 🙂 I’d love to hear what you think of these scones if you decide to try making them!
Bob says...
I made these this past weekend and they are delicious. One of these and some fruit makes an awesome lo-cal breakfast. Thanks for the great recipe.
Amy says...
I’m so glad you enjoyed these scones Bob! Thank you for taking the time to let me know — that truly means a lot to me!
Cassandra says...
Amy , this recipe seems simply divine but if i am unable to make the chai spice , is there something else i should put in instead? and what if i have some of the spices but not all of them? Btw i really like the stories intertwined with ur baking , it makes each of the recipes unique and each special in their own way.(/≧▽≦)/😉😍💜
Amy says...
Oh my goodness, you’re such a sweetheart — I’m SO honored that you enjoy reading my stories, Cassandra!! You just made my entire day, yet again! Thank you!! 🙂 If you’d rather have plain chocolate chip scones, then you can definitely omit the spices! You can also simply use the ones you have on hand. Which ones do you have in your pantry, and which ones are you missing?
Cassandra says...
Thank u so much Amy and u are of course welcome , ur hard work deserves to be praised frankly. Anyway i have clover , cinnamon and ginger but not the rest of the spices.😊╰(*°▽°*)╯💝
Amy says...
You’re welcome, Cassandra! If you have cinnamon, cloves, and ginger, then I’d recommend using 2 teaspoons of cinnamon, ½ teaspoon of ginger, and ¼ teaspoon of cloves. 🙂 I’m so excited to hear what you think of these scones!!
Sydney says...
Hi,
I’m plant based so I’m wondering if I substituted the butter with one like Earth Balance or Myokos, Cashew Yogurt, and almond or soy in place of the Greek yogurt and milk, if it might work? Thank you. 🙂
Mara says...
From Portugal, thank you for sharing your recipe. It looks really good and I’m going to test it this week. However, to make home-made chai, I don’t have cardamom. What can I use to replace it? Or can I just not add it?
Amy says...
I’m honored that you’d consider making these scones, Mara! Cardamom is a key ingredient in chai spice, so omitting it or replacing it will change the flavor of these scones. They’ll still taste delicious — just not like true chai! 😉 For more “classic” spiced scones, I’d recommend substituting ¼ teaspoon cinnamon, ⅛ teaspoon allspice, and ⅛ teaspoon nutmeg for the cardamom.
I’d love to hear what you think of these scones whenever you get a chance to try making them!
Kadence Jenkins says...
These scones are sooo good! This was the first of your scone recipes I tried and I definitely hit the jackpot. I think I did add a little too much milk because the dough was pretty wet and sticky and the scones were slightly doughy. They tasted amazing though. Thank you so much for this recipe!!!
Stacey @ Amy's Healthy Baking says...
That’s so sweet of you to say, Kadence! It really means a lot that you decided to make these scones and took the time to let us know how much you enjoyed them!
The dough isn’t supposed to be as wet as you described, so I’m happy to help figure out why that happened if you’re open to a little troubleshooting! I have a few questions that might help us narrow down the culprit.
How much milk did you add to the dough?
Did you make any substitutions or modifications to the recipe, including the ones we listed in the Notes section? (Flours, alternative sweeteners, the option for sweeter scones, etc!)
How long did you bake your scones? Did you flatten and/or separate the wedges before baking?
I’d love to help so that these scones come out even better if you decide to make them again! 😉
