Throughout most of high school, I started my day with the exact same meal almost every day: a bowl of Trader Joe’s cranberry almond clusters cereal, served in a clear blue ramekin. (The ramekin’s small size created the perfect cereal-to-milk ratio and prevented the cornflakes from turning too soggy!)
On the rare occasion that Mom had baked over the weekend, I sometimes left the cereal box on the pantry shelf and reheated a banana muffin or two for breakfast instead. I loved how the tops developed a sweet, slightly sticky layer while sealed in baggies in the fridge! But because we usually snacked on all of the bananas from the fruit bowl during the week, those muffin mornings only happened a handful of times each year.
My afternoon snacks were just as predictable. Although the flavor varied, I always reached for a granola bar—either Nature Valley, Nutri-Grain, or Quaker’s Chewy ones. I especially looked forward to the weeks where Mom restocked the pantry with boxes of chocolate chunk or s’mores bars… Once a chocoholic, always a chocoholic! (It’s why I published a chocolate cookbook!)
