Growing up, I always looked forward to Valentine’s Day. It began with Mom’s homemade pancakes, which she cooked in the shape of hearts (instead of our usual Mickey Mouse ones!). While we waited for her to finish flipping, my brother and I opened the special valentine cards from her and Dad propped up at our seats at the table, and we set aside the candy to eat after school.
Our elementary school teachers organized parties for us each year, complete with sugar cookies, cupcakes, fruit punch, and lots of time to walk around the clusters of desks to drop off paper cards in each student’s sticker-adorned shoebox “mailbox.” Some kids’ parents even bought candy to attach to each valentine, so we ended up with quite a few cherry lollipops, red hots, and conversation hearts!
Although no longer a kid, I still love to look at the packages of paper valentines and vast selection of sweets at the stores when February rolls around. While the former mainly bring back fond childhood memories, the latter are still so tempting! Decadent gourmet truffles, heart-shaped dark chocolates, festively wrapped Hershey kisses, caramel-filled Ghirardelli squares, more chocolate truffles…
It takes a lot of willpower to stop myself from buying one of everything!
